“The purebred Nenets Laika is considered indispensable in northern reindeer husbandry. Figuratively speaking, these are the arms and legs of a tundra inhabitant: she alone works for two or three herders. There are practically no real herders left of reindeer in the North, so The opening of such a center is a real opportunity to effectively solve the problems of natural and scientific selection, the shortage of Yamal huskies for reindeer husbandry, as well as for breeding of service and sporting dogs,” said the Speaker of the Yamal Parliament, Sergei Yamkin.
Deputy of the Yamal Legislative Assembly Timofey Laptander shares this point of view.
“A good husky is a real help. She perfectly understands the life of a reindeer herder, knows the friend, the smell of smoke in the camp, knows how to gather reindeer into a herd, is very hardy and affectionate. You can’t tundra cannot do without this. Unfortunately, the breed is almost lost, it was diluted by the dogs with “Great Lands” that they brought with them when they were on duty. The mixed breed driver is stubborn and often crushes the calves. Shepherds of reindeer throughout the arctic north we need purebred husky reindeer,” he says.
Currently, several purebred dogs live in the center. The leader of the kennel is Puro, Vladimir Laptander’s nine-year-old dog. A couple of years ago, geneticists and dog handlers from different regions of the country evaluated 50 herders from three reindeer-herding municipalities of Yamal within the framework of the PORA project “Nenets Laika – the heritage of Russia”. The handsome Puro received the highest score according to the test results. In January last year, they found a friend, Laura, in the Yamal region. The couple has already had children several times. By the way, a queue of reindeer herders who plan to acquire an intelligent husky has already formed. Everyone needs a four-legged shepherd of the highest standard.
