This exhibition has been held for several years on the initiative of Alexander Chusov, perhaps the most famous vegetable producer in the country. In 2017, he proposed growing and displaying a giant pumpkin and has taken this issue seriously ever since. This year he displayed five pumpkins in the Apothecary Garden, the largest weighing more than 500 kg!
Both professionals and ordinary people come to the “garden” with the same questions: how did you grow it? Where did you plant it? What did you add?
In fact, a systematic approach is important here. First you must select the seeds. Then transplant the first sprout (by the way, it is no larger than a cucumber) into properly prepared soil: vermicompost, fertilizer, hay – there is a whole science here. If everything is done correctly, one pumpkin can add 20 kilograms per day.
What about the taste? We will find out on September 24: at 2:00 p.m. the giant pumpkins will open. Some of the pulp will be distributed to visitors and the second will be sent to the zoo as food.
